Colombia's government has suspended news, regional, cultural and educational programming on 20 radio stations created under the 2016 Peace Agreement with the FARC, replacing all output with a centralised music schedule broadcast from Bogotá. The change, implemented on 18 August, has drawn a challenge from the national ombudsman, a constitutional legal action from a former presidential candidate, and a formal oversight debate in Congress.
What changed and who decided it
The 20 stations were established by the peace accord specifically to serve communities in territories most affected by decades of armed conflict. Since last week, each has aired exclusively music, with content no longer originating locally. The decision was taken by the new management of Inravisión — formerly known as RTVC, Colombia's public media system — which has stated that it will conduct a review of those stations' schedules, its other 11 decentralised frequencies, and its television programming. No timeline for that review has been given.
Legal and institutional responses
The Defensoría del Pueblo, Colombia's independent human-rights ombudsman, has publicly questioned the decision. Former presidential candidate Iván Cepeda has announced he will file a tutela — a constitutional mechanism for the urgent protection of fundamental rights — in response. Separately, a debate de control político, a formal congressional accountability procedure, has been called. None of these processes has yet reached a conclusion.
Significance for the peace process
The stations are widely described as the only element of the 2016 peace agreement to have been fully implemented. Their suspension comes at a moment when information access in conflict-affected regions remains fragile; armed groups have been reported to use social media platforms to recruit minors in some of those same communities, underscoring the broader stakes of cutting local public broadcasting. Whether Inravisión's review will restore original programming, alter it further, or lead to permanent changes remains unresolved.
