The rights organisation's investigation found that violence linked to armed conflict and drug trafficking in Colombia continues to endanger tens of thousands of children, who are recruited by these groups. HRW identified social media platforms as bearing significant responsibility for enabling that process, with Facebook and TikTok specifically named as facilitating the enlistment of minors.

Platforms face accusations over their role

HRW's allegations against both platforms remain uncontested in the published material; neither Facebook nor TikTok appears to have publicly responded to the findings at the time of the report's release. The accusations mirror concerns that have surfaced in other contexts: TikTok has separately been accused of enabling extremist groups to recruit young people in Berlin, while Meta is currently facing legal proceedings in the United States over child safety failings.
