Microsoft has officially announced a new Xbox feature that will allow players to convert their physical game discs into permanent digital entitlements, with testing set to begin with Xbox Insider members on 31 August before a broader rollout to Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles in the coming months.
How the feature works
The disc-to-digital system operates by having a player insert a supported physical disc into a compatible Xbox console and launch the game, at which point a digital entitlement is claimed. According to Jason Ronald, Microsoft's Vice President of next generation at Xbox, the entitlement is tied to the specific disc rather than the account, meaning it will transfer between accounts if the physical game is swapped with a friend or used on a different Xbox profile. Once a digital version has been claimed and the title supports it, players may also access it on PC via Xbox Play Anywhere or stream it across multiple devices through Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Publisher control and title availability
A leaked internal memo from earlier this month revealed that publishers retain control over which titles participate in the scheme, meaning coverage will not be universal from the outset. Ronald confirmed that Microsoft is launching with thousands of titles and intends to expand that library over time. "While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come," he said. The feature is positioned explicitly within Microsoft's broader game preservation effort and as preparatory groundwork for the next generation of Xbox hardware.
Context: Sony's contrasting direction
The announcement arrives weeks after Sony confirmed it will cease producing physical PlayStation game discs, with new titles released after January 2028 set to be digital-only. Whether Microsoft will follow suit with a similar end to Xbox disc production remains unclear. Notably, Sony has not announced any equivalent mechanism for converting an existing physical library into digital entitlements. Microsoft is also separately working to bring original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles to PC, a development that could, according to the company, eventually enable the next Xbox console to play every Xbox game ever made.
