Range Rover Electric: Familiar Design, 330 Real-World Miles and £154,070 Starting Price

Range Rover has formally launched its first electric production vehicle, a full-size SUV whose exterior styling is described as near-identical to the marque's existing petrol-powered line-up — a deliberate aesthetic choice that sets it apart from many competitors that have adopted more unconventional silhouettes for their electric offerings.

The powertrain centres on twin permanent magnet electric motors producing a combined 260kW, fed by a double-stacked 118.5kWh lithium-ion battery. Range Rover quotes an estimated real-world range of 330 miles and an all-wheel drive output of 542 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque, which the company characterises as delivering "V8 levels of power." The vehicle completes the 0–60mph sprint in 4.3 seconds.

An 800-volt electrical architecture enables DC fast charging from 10 to 80 per cent in 22 minutes when connected to a 350kW charger, or an addition of approximately 137 miles of range within 10 minutes.

Off-road capability

Range Rover places particular emphasis on terrain performance. Rather than relying on mechanical gearing adjustments when wheel slip occurs, the electric motors recalibrate power distribution in 50 milliseconds — a rate the company says is 100 times faster than a conventional petrol-engined vehicle. The one-pedal drive system is tuned to manage inclines of up to 45 degrees, and both the battery and motors are fully sealed to allow water wading to a depth of 900mm. A built-in heat pump recaptures waste heat to warm the cabin and maintain battery temperature, with Range Rover claiming this preserves up to 25 additional miles of range in freezing conditions.

Price, production, and timeline

The Range Rover Electric carries a starting price of £154,070 in the United Kingdom, equivalent to approximately $140,450 in the United States at current rates. JLR confirmed it will produce the vehicle at its Solihull factory in the West Midlands, alongside existing petrol and hybrid variants. The company says 300 patents have been submitted in connection with the model, describing it as the most technologically custom-built Range Rover produced to date.

The journey to this point has been protracted. Range Rover first disclosed it was developing an electric model more than five years ago, and opened pre-orders in 2023 with an initial promise of customer deliveries commencing a year later. Orders are now being accepted. The Verge notes that rivals such as the Porsche Macan EV and the Lotus Eletre occupy a similar competitive space, while Lucid and Rivian are also cited as points of reference on pure performance metrics.
