Holiday turns into workshop odyssey
Eileen R., 31, and her mother Sonja, 58, set off from Hamburg with a roof box, a tent, and two dogs for a camping holiday in England. On the second day, error messages appeared on the dashboard of their Macan 4S — a vehicle with a list price of €118,251. A Porsche workshop read the control unit and returned the car to service, but the fault recurred. At the next charging stop, the charging port flap blocked entirely, leaving the SUV unable to fast-charge and effectively immobile for long-distance travel.
The ten days that followed involved repeated negotiations with mechanics, a search for hotel accommodation, calls to breakdown operators, and repeated contact with Porsche's customer helpline. The car sat idle in a depot for two days before being transferred to an authorised dealer.
Porsche Assistance criticised
Sonja R. said Porsche Assistance — whose stated promise is "mobility and safety on call" — had "completely failed". She acknowledged that individual members of staff had tried to help, but described "crass communication failures and no coordinated approach whatsoever". Porsche has not publicly addressed those specific allegations.
The Porsche Centre South Lakes in Carnforth eventually took on the repair. Neither a full vehicle restart nor a replacement of the charging flap actuator motors resolved the problem. Porsche's development department in Stuttgart subsequently became involved to support the British technicians, though the root cause had not been identified at the time of reporting.
Design complexity limits emergency options
Unlike most electric vehicles, the Porsche Macan's charging port cover does not simply swing outward; it slides laterally beneath the bodywork — a design shared with its technical sibling, the Audi Q6 e-tron. The mechanism is tightly integrated with the car's on-board electronics, making manual override difficult.
Porsche confirmed in a statement that the painted cover can be unclipped from its carrier in an emergency, creating a gap through which a charging cable can be inserted. However, the manufacturer acknowledged that only AC charging at 11 kW is then possible, as the larger DC connector will not fit the aperture. At that rate, completing a journey of any significant distance would take days, not hours. Some rival manufacturers — including Volkswagen and Polestar — use simpler mechanical flap designs that do not depend on the vehicle's electronics to operate.
Software suspected; prognosis uncertain
An unnamed technical expert consulted during the reporting of this story suggested the fault most likely resides in the control unit software. The expert warned that as such "rolling computers" age, the prospect of repair becomes increasingly uncertain — and suggested that, at present, even Porsche itself cannot resolve the issue. Porsche has not confirmed or denied that assessment.
Eileen R. and her mother were unable to fly home because airlines will not carry their dogs in the cabin, and dogs are prohibited on the Eurostar. They planned to return a hire car in England and arrange to be collected from Dover, leaving the Macan in the workshop. The car remained unrepaired at the time of publication.
The case illustrates a broader concern about complex, software-integrated systems in modern electric vehicles: when a relatively minor component fails and its function is embedded deep within a car's electronics, even the manufacturer's own engineers may struggle to effect a swift repair.
