A man drove a car into a crowd in the north-western French city of Caen on Wednesday evening, killing at least one person and injuring a further ten, according to emergency services and police sources.

The incident

The vehicle struck people near the city's railway station at around 10pm. Fire service figures indicate that four of those injured sustained serious wounds, while six others suffered minor injuries.

A suspect arrested

According to police sources, the driver had been involved in an altercation shortly before steering his car into the crowd. A suspect was subsequently arrested. The precise nature of the dispute and any broader motive have not been confirmed.
