A 24-year-old woman was rescued in Águas Lindas, in the Brazilian state of Goiás, after being gagged and chained for five days by her former partner, police have confirmed. The suspect, identified as Ailton Rodrigues Mendes, was apprehended and the victim, Emiliane Tamara Nunes Carvalho, was freed alive following a joint operation by the Civil Police and Military Police on Friday the 21st.

Allegations of chemical abuse during the relationship

The case has widened beyond the captivity itself. The lead investigator, Delegada Tamires Ávila Teixeira of the Women's Police Station, confirmed that officers are now examining the possibility that caustic soda was introduced into the home's water supply during the couple's relationship. According to the delegada, Emiliane had previously reported that her skin burned when she showered, and she believed Ailton had placed a substance in the water tank. Forensic samples of the water were collected and a toxicological examination was requested as part of an earlier inquiry, though no results have been disclosed.

"He drugged me, pressing a chemical substance to my nose," she said in a statement on social media. She was subsequently held captive for five days before her rescue.

An attempt to contact the suspect's legal defence received no response at the time of publication.
