Barcelona Arson Suspect Arrested

Barcelona's municipal police force, the Guardia Urbana, has arrested a man suspected of carrying out 18 acts of arson across the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district between 6 May and 5 August this year, in an operation announced by the city council on Monday.

Scale of the alleged campaign

According to the city council, the Urbana's Investigation Unit attributes to the suspect the deliberate burning of 127 waste containers and damage to 11 vehicles across the neighbourhoods of Sant Gervasi and Pedralbes. The fires also caused damage to the cobbled square of the Monasterio de Pedralbes — a site classified as protected heritage — and to the wall of the Escola Sant Marc.

In one incident, a gas pipe at the Abat Oliba Loreto school was affected, forcing the suspension of the school's gas supply for two days. Total damage across all 18 fires is estimated by the city council at approximately €115,000.

Arrest and investigation

The suspect was detained on Sunday following an investigation by the Urbana's specialist unit. The city council has not released the individual's identity, and the suspect is presumed innocent unless and until any charge is proven. No motive has been stated in the available material.
