Sunbrella Trend Sweeps Across Europe

On a Monday afternoon in San Sebastián de los Reyes, on the outskirts of Madrid, Susana, 52, walks to the metro along a pavement with no natural shade, the temperature sitting at 36°C — though the unrelenting concrete and asphalt make it feel closer to 45°C. Above her head, a black umbrella. "I started using it last summer," she says. "I always carry it in my bag. Walking in this sun is impossible." Her habit is becoming increasingly common across Europe, and it has a name: the sunbrella.
From Asian custom to European necessity
The practice of carrying an umbrella as a shield against solar radiation rather than rain has been widespread across parts of Asia for decades. Its consolidation in western Europe is being interpreted by experts not as a fashion whim but as a form of adaptation to the accelerating extremes of climate change. Alongside mitigation efforts aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, individuals and cities are being compelled to modify their habits and environments to limit the damage wrought by the new climate reality.
In June, the term "sunbrella" entered the British cultural lexicon when it was used to describe the emergence of the umbrella as a combined fashion accessory and sun-protection tool during European heatwaves. The neologism has since gained traction as a shorthand for a broader behavioural shift.
A market responding to demand
Hard sales data supports the trend. Doppler, an Austrian umbrella manufacturer and one of Europe's leading producers in the sector, recorded a 50 per cent increase in sales in 2026. Among its best-selling products is the zeroSun, a model engineered specifically to block UV radiation and reduce heat exposure, marketed under the slogan: "A umbrella gives you your own personal shade."
No official European statistics yet exist measuring how many umbrellas are purchased specifically for sun protection — a reflection of how recently the trend has taken hold. The commercial picture, however, is already substantial. The global market for UV-protection umbrellas surpassed $1.6 billion in 2025, according to Verified Market Research, a market consultancy. The firm projects the sector will reach $2.8 billion by 2033, growing at roughly 7 per cent annually, driven in part by Europe and the Americas adopting habits long normalised across Asia.
The science behind the shade
The behaviour has accumulated a growing body of scientific support. Researchers at Chang'an University in China published a study in March this year measuring the thermal effect of umbrella use on pedestrians in direct sunlight. Their central finding was that the mean radiant temperature — which accounts for radiation from surrounding surfaces as well as air temperature — can fall by approximately 5 to 10°C beneath an umbrella's canopy.
Separately, researchers at the University of Alabama conducted a comparative study over several days, measuring temperatures under a conventional umbrella and under one designed with UV-blocking materials. Both types offered meaningful protection: the conventional umbrella recorded a temperature 1.7°C cooler than direct sunlight, while the UV-protection model achieved a reduction of 2.7°C. The study concluded that any umbrella creates a shadow zone that reduces direct solar radiation reaching the head and body, making it a practical low-cost adaptation tool, particularly for those who walk or work outdoors.
As Europe continues to record punishing summer mortality linked to extreme heat, the relevance of accessible interventions such as this has grown considerably.
Medical endorsement — with caveats
Dermatologists broadly welcome the habit but urge caution about its limits. Carla Ferrándiz-Pulido, head of Dermato-Oncology at the Hospital Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona, confirms that umbrellas "protect from the sun, because they reduce the direct solar radiation reaching the skin." She is nonetheless clear that the practice should not "replace" the full range of photoprotection measures.
Clinicians point out that UV radiation can reach the skin indirectly, reflected from pavements, buildings, water, and sand. They recommend combining umbrella use with protective clothing, sunglasses, and a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 on exposed areas.
Urban adaptation in practice
Anthropologist Tomás Criado, who founded the Department of Umbrología — an organisation promoting the role of shade in urban life — frames the sunbrella as emblematic of a wider transformation. Shade, he argues, is "a central and very necessary element of the transformation of cities to confront the impacts of climate change." The sunbrella, mundane as it appears, may prove to be one of the more personal and portable expressions of that imperative.
