A technical fault at a contracted supplier caused almost 1,200 postal ballot packs to be printed and dispatched twice to voters in Halle, just days before Saxony-Anhalt's state election on 6 September. The city moved swiftly to nullify the erroneous documents and has pledged to send affected voters replacement packs containing a valid ballot paper, ensuring they remain able to cast their votes.
Two incidents in quick succession
The Halle error is the second such incident in the space of a few days. A comparable fault was recorded in Magdeburg, where 440 ballot papers were sent out twice. In both cases, officials sought to contain the damage quickly. Halle's district electoral officer, Egbert Geier, told the dpa news agency that the election had been secure throughout, and confirmed that the state returning officer for Saxony-Anhalt had been notified. A double vote, he insisted, was ruled out.
AfD raises allegations without evidence
The back-to-back errors have nonetheless provided ammunition to the AfD, which had already been voicing scepticism about the reliability of postal voting. The party's lead candidate for the election, Ulrich Siegmund, directed particular attention at care homes, urging relatives and staff to ensure that no one pressures residents when casting their votes. He offered no concrete evidence of any such influence having taken place. In a post on the social network X, Siegmund went further, suggesting that political instructions could originate from what he described as a "certain left-wing or green corner" — a claim he also left unsubstantiated.
The BIVA care protection association rejected the allegations sharply, stating there was no indication whatsoever of undue influence over residents during state elections and that there was no basis for questioning the integrity of care staff or relatives. State returning officer Christa Dieckmann similarly dismissed suggestions that postal voting in Saxony-Anhalt is insecure or readily manipulated.
Election integrity in focus
With the AfD polling at around 40 per cent in Saxony-Anhalt and the political temperature running high, the twin technical failures have sharpened scrutiny of electoral administration in the state. Officials maintain that procedural safeguards have functioned as intended and that no valid votes have been lost or corrupted. The outstanding question — whether voter confidence has been dented regardless — will be answered at the ballot box on 6 September.
