Phil Neumann delivered one of the more unlikely match-winning performances of the Championship's opening weekend, heading both goals as Birmingham City defeated Wrexham 2-1 on Friday evening to claim their first league victory of the new campaign.
Two headers, one decisive evening
The 29-year-old German central defender opened the scoring after just 13 minutes, rising at the far post to head home from a corner delivered by Alex Cochrane. When Wrexham equalised nine minutes into the second half, it was again Neumann who proved the difference: in the 63rd minute he met a ball from August Priske to head in the winner and complete an improbable brace.
Speaking after the match, Neumann described the evening as extraordinary. "That was simply crazy," he said. "There are days in football when everything just goes your way. But a brace as a defender is genuinely rare and very special. It has confirmed my current form — the extra sessions in the summer are paying off." The former Hannover 96 player also paid tribute to his wife Victoria and their young son: "She keeps things running at home. Without her and without our little son, I wouldn't be the player I am."
Transfer uncertainty clouds the moment
The timing of Neumann's performance adds a complicating dimension. With the transfer window approaching its close, several Premier League clubs are reported to have placed the defender on their shortlists. Hull City are said to have made direct enquiries, while clubs in Germany have also sought information on his availability. Neumann is contracted to Birmingham until 2028.
Whether the brace proves to be a farewell statement or the opening note of a strong Championship campaign remains unresolved. His immediate future at St Andrew's is, by all accounts, uncertain. Much like other clubs navigating late-window departures, Birmingham may yet find their summer defined as much by the deals that fall through as those that are completed. For Neumann, the goals will at minimum have sharpened the interest of any club yet to make a firm move — and reminded Birmingham precisely what they stand to lose.
