Germany is set to experience a dramatic weather reversal on Thursday, 27 August 2026, as a final burst of late-summer heat peaking at up to 34°C gives way to severe thunderstorms expected to sweep across much of the country by evening, heralding the effective end of the meteorological summer.

Peak heat in the south-west

Temperatures are forecast to climb broadly to between 30 and 33°C across the country during the morning and early afternoon, with the south-west and the Upper Rhine corridor reaching up to 34°C. Conditions in the east and north-east are expected to remain dry throughout the day. Diplom-Meteorologe Dominik Jung described Thursday as "a genuinely hot late-summer day — and at the same time the opening act of a shift in the weather."

Storms moving in from the west

The heat is expected to build significant atmospheric instability, raising the risk of thunderstorms from late afternoon. Climatologist Dr Karsten Brandt warned that from late afternoon and into the evening, storms would push into North Rhine-Westphalia from Belgium and the Netherlands, while Hesse and the Black Forest would simultaneously face the risk of first discharges. The German Weather Service (DWD) has also cautioned that "several hours of thundery rain" are possible, alongside hail and squally gusts.

Storms to extend eastward on Friday

The disturbance is not expected to pass quickly. On Friday, further powerful thunderstorms are forecast to track from west to east across wide swathes of the country. Average temperatures are set to fall to between 23 and 29°C as the intense heat retreats — a development that effectively signals the close of summer ahead of its official meteorological end on 31 August. A weather divide has already been shaping conditions across Germany in recent days, and Thursday's events mark the most pronounced shift of the season so far.

The pattern reflects a broader summer of weather extremes across Europe in 2026, characterised by prolonged heat punctuated by intense convective events. Whether the transition brings lasting relief or merely a brief interlude before further warm spells remains to be seen.
