The Democratic Republic of Congo is battling a severe and prolonged cholera outbreak that has largely been overshadowed by the country's ongoing Ebola epidemic. Since the start of 2026, nearly 39,500 suspected cases and 1,173 deaths have been recorded, prompting urgent warnings from the World Health Organisation and Médecins sans frontières.
Elevated fatality in non-endemic provinces
The outbreak's case fatality rate is notably higher in provinces not ordinarily affected by the disease. The WHO and MSF have raised alarm over weaknesses in the management and treatment of cholera patients in these areas, where healthcare systems are less equipped to respond to a disease that elsewhere in the country has become tragically familiar.
Risk of wider emergencies being sidelined
Both organisations warn that the intense global focus on the Ebola outbreak, which has already claimed more than 2,000 lives in under 100 days, risks pushing other critical health emergencies to the margins. With humanitarian attention and resources concentrated on Ebola, the cholera crisis may be receiving insufficient support at a moment when the burden of disease is widening.
The WHO has already described the Ebola situation in Congo as out of control, and health authorities now face the compounding difficulty of managing multiple simultaneous crises with constrained capacity. Whether the international response will be broadened to adequately address cholera alongside Ebola remains unresolved.
