What happened?
Cruz Hewitt (17), son of Lleyton Hewitt, was spotted in the US Open stands on Monday with Roger Federer's twin daughters Myla and Charlene (both 17), watching Ben Shelton's first-round match.
Why it matters
The encounter is the third notable joint public appearance by the three teenagers in 2026, following the Australian Open in January and Wimbledon last month, pointing to a close friendship between the families.
The US Open in New York has provided a backdrop not only for the main draw but for an emerging story in the stands: Cruz Hewitt (17), son of Australian tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt, was spotted on Monday sitting alongside Myla Rose Federer and Charlene Riva Federer, the 17-year-old twin daughters of Roger Federer. Myla's younger brother Leo was also present. The group watched the first-round match between American Ben Shelton and Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor.
According to the source material, Cruz and Myla in particular appeared at ease with each other — talking throughout the match, laughing together, and sharing content on their phones. The footage and photographs circulated online, making the trio the talking point of the tournament's early days.
This was not an isolated encounter. The same teenagers were seen together at the Australian Open in January, and at Wimbledon the previous month Cruz reportedly greeted the Federer twins warmly on his arrival for the junior final. Woman's Day magazine cited an unnamed source from the group's circle as saying Cruz has maintained close contact with Myla and her twin sister for some time, and that they are, at minimum, firm friends.
ATP debut and Switzerland speculation
Beyond social appearances, Cruz Hewitt is establishing himself on tour. In July he secured his first ATP-level victory, defeating American Marcos Giron 6–3, 6–4 in Washington.
Separately, the Daily Mail has reported on the possibility of Cruz relocating to Switzerland, where the Federer twins live with their father. That report suggested such a move could allow Cruz to accelerate his own tennis development and draw on Roger Federer's experience. However, the same reporting indicated that Cruz's parents, Lleyton Hewitt and his wife Bec (43), are said to be sceptical of the proposed move. Neither family has publicly confirmed or denied these claims.
Elsewhere in the draw, Alexander Zverev came through a five-set contest against Italy's Lorenzo Sonego in the early hours of Wednesday morning US time to advance in the tournament.
