Two employees at Frankfurt Airport have died from malaria within a matter of weeks, in circumstances that have alarmed public health officials: neither man had recently left Germany. Experts are treating the cases as instances of so-called airport malaria — in which an infected Anopheles mosquito, believed to have arrived concealed aboard a flight from a malaria-endemic region, bit both men on German soil.
How one mosquito can infect several people
Prof. Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit, a specialist in microbiology and professor at the University of Hamburg, says the mechanism is straightforward but frequently overlooked. Female Anopheles mosquitoes require blood to develop their eggs and normally need only a single feeding. However, if disturbed mid-bite, they will seek an alternative host. "If the person drives the mosquito away, it simply stings another person," Schmidt-Chanasit explained. That behavioural trait alone could account for multiple workers being affected by a single insect.
The risk from mosquitoes already present in Germany
Germany does harbour indigenous Anopheles species — among them Anopheles plumbeus, which is theoretically capable of transmitting Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite responsible for the most dangerous form of the disease, malaria tropica. In practice, however, an outbreak is considered all but impossible. For a domestic mosquito to transmit malaria, it must first bite an infected person; such patients are typically identified and treated rapidly in Germany. "The probability of malaria outbreaks is absolutely negligible today," Schmidt-Chanasit said. The comparison with global figures underlines the scale of the problem elsewhere: worldwide, mosquitoes are estimated to kill between 725,000 and roughly one million people each year — far exceeding fatalities caused by snakes (80,000–138,000), dogs, mainly through rabies (25,000–70,000), or sharks (approximately ten).
How long can a stowaway mosquito survive at an airport?
Not long, in all likelihood. Frankfurt Airport's environment — large expanses of concrete, low humidity, and high ambient temperatures — is inhospitable to mosquitoes. Cold and dry conditions are lethal to the insects. Schmidt-Chanasit said he did not expect such a mosquito to survive there for weeks, let alone months, describing long-term survival as "extremely unlikely". Given that the suspected introduction is believed to have occurred in early July, he considers it improbable that further infected mosquitoes remain active. Health authorities and airport operators are nonetheless running specialist trapping programmes to monitor the situation. For the travelling public and the wider population, Schmidt-Chanasit's assessment is measured: "People do not need to worry."
Why the workers died remains partly unclear
The precise circumstances of the two deaths have not been fully established. It is known that malaria was confirmed in both cases only after the men had died. Schmidt-Chanasit cautioned, however, that post-mortem confirmation does not automatically constitute evidence of a late diagnosis. What is not in dispute is the time-critical nature of the disease: "The diagnosis must come early so that deaths can be avoided," he said. When detected promptly, effective treatments exist. When treatment is delayed, the parasites multiply rapidly and damage vital organs. Whether pre-existing health conditions contributed to the deaths remains an open question.
Where did the mosquito come from?
Africa is the most probable origin, given the continent's high burden of malaria. Schmidt-Chanasit noted that genetic analysis of both the mosquito species and the pathogen can — much like the sequencing of coronavirus variants — yield what he described as a "fingerprint" pointing to a geographic source. Whether investigators have yet identified a specific flight is, according to ongoing enquiries, still to be determined.
A recurring but rare phenomenon
Frankfurt Airport recorded cases of airport malaria as recently as 2023. Schmidt-Chanasit acknowledged that such episodes are rare but cyclical: after periods of calm, individual cases resurface. Even comprehensive protective measures, he said, cannot entirely prevent a single insect from concealing itself aboard an aircraft. On the question of vaccination, existing malaria vaccines — which offer roughly 30 per cent protection — were developed primarily for children in high-transmission endemic areas and are not recommended for travellers or airport workers in Germany. "Malaria vaccination plays no role for us," Schmidt-Chanasit said.
