Alexandra Burghardt Announces Pregnancy

Alexandra Burghardt, the 32-year-old German athlete who made history by winning medals at both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, has announced she is expecting her first child. Burghardt made the announcement on Tuesday through her Instagram account, posting a photograph of herself in a bikini at the Parkhotel Mondschein in Bolzano, South Tyrol, in which the beginnings of a baby bump are visible.

Halfway there

Burghardt captioned the image with the phrase "mama, in the making" and accompanied it with the hashtag "halfbaked", which suggests she may be approximately halfway through her pregnancy. She did not, however, state a specific due date in the post. The announcement drew warm congratulations from a number of prominent German sports figures, among them sprinter Alica Schmidt, 27, and winter sport athletes Emma Aicher, 22, Franziska Preuß, 32, and Ramona Hofmeister, 30.

A career of rare distinction

Burghardt had retired from competitive sport only months earlier, in June 2026. Her career placed her in extraordinarily rare company: she is only the second German woman, after the speed skater and cyclist Christa Luding, to have claimed medals at both the Summer and Winter Olympics. At the 2022 Beijing Winter Games, she won silver as a pusher in the two-woman bobsleigh alongside pilot Mariama Jamanka. Two years later, she added Olympic bronze as part of the German 4x100 metres relay team at the Paris 2024 Games, alongside Lisa Mayer, Rebekka Haase, and Gina Lückenkemper.

News of Burghardt's pregnancy comes during a busy period of high-profile parenthood announcements in international sport — Kyle Walker recently became a father for the seventh time — underscoring how prominently athletes' personal milestones now feature in public discourse. For Burghardt, the announcement marks the beginning of a new chapter, one that follows a career of singular achievement across two Olympic disciplines.
